About CITYWEST 4x4 Club

CITYWEST began as the dream of Milton Oliver and Mark Andrews who have been friends for more than twenty-five years. Mark was the first to get into off-roading and has been off-roading for more than twenty years. Milton has been off-roading for seven years now. Since moving back to the west of Melbourne they had dreamed - on and off - of forming a 4WD club that was not vehicle-specific or suburb-specific, but that would be family-friendly and genuinely committed to enhancing 4x4 driver skills of its members. More of a movement within the recreation, than a club.

Some of their experiences of other clubs had been disappointing - it was hard to break into the scene if you wanted to learn, and so a new kind of club was envisaged. As they gathered a circle of other 4WDriving friends in Melbourne's west, who were keen off-roaders, too, the dream began to gather momentum. There were so many benefits to many others if they could form a club, they reasoned. And so, CITYWEST began to form ...

Milton and Mark both firmly believe that enhanced skills produce greater off-road enjoyment - and safely. The formation of a club would enable access to a range of training opportunities for members at much more affordable prices than doing so individually with commercial trainers.

In February of 2003, Milton and Mark, got together with Dave Tanti, another very experienced off-roader, and a brief was prepared. By May 2003 CITYWEST had conducted its public launch in Melton with the election of an inaugural committee. By June the new club was an incorporated legal entity and affiliated with Four Wheel Drive Victoria - the peak body for four wheel driving in Victoria.

Since then the club has produced an excellent monthly magazine, conducted monthly general meetings and many club trips and events.

Milton was elected to the committee of Four Wheel Drive Victoria in August 2003, and was appointed Chaplain to the association in October of 2003. Mark serves on a sub-committee of the association also that developed trend-setting Adventure Activity Standards for Four Wheel Driving clubs that has won acclaim by the Outdoor Recreation Council of Victoria. So much has happened in a short time - but it is just the beginning of an exciting adventure. CITYWEST already has influence in the 4WDriving community and is attracting very positive comment and goodwill from many quarters because of its leadership and contribution beyond its own program.
